Strict vegetarianism and veganism has been gaining popularity in Quebec in recent years, and in Montreal, there is no shortage of options for us to discover. From the classic veggie burger to decadent desserts and health bowls, there is something for everyone! Here are some great places for getting acquainted with vegetarian and vegan food.
This friendly restaurant, which is defined as vegan fast food, offers a variety of options, including original selections. On the menu we find hearty burgers, various sandwiches (the “shiitake teriyaki" sandwich is simply divine), sweet potato poutine, bowls filled with vegetables, chili and their famous brownie. They offer a tasty, surprising and comforting menu, which will appeal to both long-time vegans and curious omnivores.
Sophie Sucrée is a lovely pâtisserie where all the baked goods are vegan, plus they offer several gluten-free options - perfect for those with a sweet tooth! The selection of delicacies is frequently renewed with seasonally inspired treats, but thankfully the classics - cupcakes, tarts/pies, scones and cookies - are available at all times. This is a nice destination for reading or working while sipping tea and, above all, for getting some dessert to impress guests after dinner!
This is one of the most popular vegan restaurants in Montreal - and with good reason, as it does not cease to innovate. The restaurant’s recent expansion and the opening of the grocery counter (adjacent to the restaurant) allow greater accessibility to their delicious dishes. The signature dish is the Dragon bowl, composed of brown rice, tofu or tempeh, various fresh vegetables and a delicious Dragon sauce, but all of the menu selections are worth trying - especially their weekend brunch menu, which is definitely a favourite.
This famous luxury friterie (chip/french fry restaurant) at the corner of Rachel and St. Laurent streets offers delicious vegan options such as the tofu burger (without mayo), patatine (without cheese) and even a breakfast plate!
The all-you-can-eat buffet offered at Yuan is designed for outings with friends and for lovers of vegan meat (“fake meat”). They offer a variety of Asian dishes such as sushi, fried dumplings, General Tso vegan-chicken, noodles, rice and more. Special mention should be given to the ravioli with peanut sauce, which is a very popular choice.
Both a café and a performance hall, Le Cagibi is the perfect place for working or studying while eating vegan food. The vegan dishes offered are comforting classics: soups, scrambled tofu burritos, tacos, veggie burgers, wraps, and bowls of rice and beans. They also offer cookies, muffins and desserts that make our mouths water. The peanut butter square, in particular, is really worth the trip!
Pushap offers traditional vegetarian Indian cuisine at a very affordable price. Just ask for dishes without cheese so that the options on the menu then become vegan. Expect to savour dishes that are flavourful, hearty, tasty, and that will make you want to travel!
Located in the heart of the Plateau Mont-Royal, Café Venosa is a vegan eco-café and art gallery where you can socialize with cats. They offer a pleasant space for a productive work session or simply for enjoying a vegan lunch. The menu displays a variety of sandwiches, soups, salads and desserts. Special mention should be given to the lovely selection of hot drinks and the presentation of the vegan cream in the form of a cat!
