Solo mama time in Edmonton

I don’t know about you, but now that the Christmas season has come and gone, I am exhausted! From running errands, to buying gifts and looking after my little one, this mama could use a time out. When I need some alone time, here are my go to places to relax and refresh.

Muscle Elements Massage Therapy

1
3-9 Chippewa Rd, Sherwood Park, AB T8A 6J7

I discovered Muscle Elements when I was pregnant with my daughter. I was suffering bad sciatica from my pregnancy and I heard prenatal massage could help. I was only planning on going once or twice during my pregnancy, but, once I met Gee, I was hooked! Gee is so sweet and always asks me where I could use some extra attention and uses the pressure that I prefer. She has been fantastic postpartum, as well. Muscle Elements has other awesome therapists, as well as an acupuncturist and a naturopath. Their new larger and more upscale location is an added bonus.

The Nail keeper

2
10381 112 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5K 1M9

This is easily one of the nicest nail salons I have ever been to. Mamas need a break and need to be pampered once in awhile. The space is clean and inviting, and the decor is on trend. I feel like I'm hanging out in the cool girls’ loft. They are all about keeping things sterile and clean. The Nail Keeper uses disposable ultra-liners that fit into the spa tub, meaning it is only used once and only for you. Their staff is super friendly, efficient and good at what they do.

PURA Botanicals

3
204-10132 124 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5N 1P6

The moment you walk into this space, you instantly feel like you can breathe again. PURA Botanicals entices all of your senses in a pleasant way. Lane Edwards (the owner) is one of the most genuine people you’ll ever meet. Treat yourself to one or all of their delectable potions. One of my personal favourites is the cocoa and rose body oil. This treat is perfect for lathering on after a bath, or you can add it to your tub with some whole milk for an extra special treat! All of their products are handmade with the finest eco-friendly ingredients.

Sticks & Stones Flowers & Home Decor

4
20-100 Palisades Way, Sherwood Park, AB T8H 0T1

My Nana first introduced me to this darling little flower shop. This little gem is tucked away in Sherwood Park and the owner, Jan, is the kindest lady. I have never seen such unique and inspirational floral creations. I find it so relaxing walking around and taking it all in; I easily spend a few hours each visit. Jan has a large variety to choose from: fresh floral bouquets, jewellery, stationery and home goods. Treat yourself to some fresh flowers; we both know you deserve it!

Old Strathcona Antique Mall

5
10323 78 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 1N8

The antique mall has been a favourite of mine for many years. Going to an antique shop with a toddler is like taking a bull into a china shop. I like to spend a long time browsing, so going solo is a necessity. Some of my favourite treasures to look for include beautiful, old books, unique art pieces, vintage baby clothes, retro dishes and, a lady’s best friend, jewellery. There are two huge levels to peruse, so make sure to give yourself time to enjoy every inch!

Since it’s cooled down outside, I’m finding myself going a little stir crazy with a busy toddler running around. My daughter has lots of energy to burn, and our house is not always the place to do it. I searched out some local spots for us to visit and keep us both happy.
Before becoming a mom, fitness was a huge part of my life. I exercised up until the day before my daughter was born. As soon as my doctor cleared me to workout, I couldn’t wait to get back at it. The difference now was that I had a cute little sidekick. Finding places to workout where I could bring my daughter along was a great way to get out of the house, bond with my daughter and set a great example for her.
Post-Christmas time leaves me feeling a tad blue and plenty broke. It’s a hard combo to handle. A key to beating those blues is getting out of the house, but it’s hard when you are trying to save money. I’ve rounded up some of my favourite inexpensive activities to get you out of the house without going into debt.
