Most of us either play sports for recreational fun or with an intent to improve our minds and bodies. These sports camps offer the best of both worlds, helping kids and teens stay physically fit, learn the nuances of friendship and teamwork and explore different sports.
There are multiple camps here, but the primary focus is on the hockey camps. Vancouver’s a hockey-mad city and except for private instruction or prep academies, there’s no better place to hone your passing and stickhandling than at Canlan. If your kids are more interested in other sports, Canlan also runs multi-sport camps where the focus is taken off hockey and placed onto other athletic activities. All camps take place during the day, with options for a full or half day.
Learn the mechanics of throwing a pitch, fine-tune fielding a ground ball and work on your slugging at this camp. The main camp runs every summer at the end of August with the option of going for a half day or full day, and they're all held in Vancouver’s Carnarvon Park. Fall camps are also available with programming depending on school schedules and there are weekly baseball games on Sunday afternoons until mid-October.
You can choose from day camps, overnight camps and outdoor education with the YMCA, one of the largest organizations worldwide. Because they’re so big, camp options are nearly endless and you can go during winter break, spring break and during the summer (the most popular time). Depending on which camp you choose, the sporting activities offered will vary but you can safely assume that nearly all camps will include swimming, canoeing, kayaking, volleyball, soccer and dodgeball.
The University of British Columbia isn’t just a world-class leader in post-secondary education, it’s also a place that opens its doors to kids looking to expand their extracurricular experiences. UBC has been in the camp game for a long time. There is an extensive variety to choose from, with sports camps subdivided into winter break camps, spring break camps, Pro-D camps and sports programming for the entire year. With the athletic facilities at UBC, sports camps are always awesome.
Your kid doesn’t have to be the tallest one on the block to get something out of the basketball and volleyball camps here because the focus is on fun, team building and skill strengthening. Camps are divided by school grades, which include 3 to 6 and 7 to 9, and run in either mornings or afternoons during March Break. While there’s no guarantee your kid will be the next star spiker or dunker, these camps have been providing safe fun for decades.
The main sports here are football, basketball and volleyball, with programs available for boys, girls or both. Campers are divided by age and school grade, with the youngest ones going to either the Little Diggers (volleyball) or Little Hoopsters (basketball) camps. It goes all the way up to age 16 for co-ed Touchdown Makers football camp. Wee athletes can take part in a multi-sport camp. There’s also a co-ed strengthening and conditioning classes for grades 4 to 8.
