The most important factor in harnessing wind power is choosing the right site to put the turbine. Here are some ways to make sure you're getting the most from your wind power system.
Local factors, such as a range of hills, may block or reduce prevailing winds. Generally hilltops and higher elevations are best suited. As a first step, contact wind-turbine manufacturers and get hold of as much information about their models as you can. Look for the cut-in speed of units, that's the wind speed at which the propeller will turn fast enough to produce power.
The next step is to find out the wind strength, its prevailing direction and the annual periods of maximum wind force. Use an anemometre to find periodic readings from a number of locations, particularly at high elevations. Ideally, this data should be gathered over a year so that seasonal variations can be taken into account. Compare your results with the manufacturer's cut-in speeds to see which prospective site is most suitable.
Try to determine whether the wind blows more during the morning and evening or more at other times of the day. If the wind is strongest in the morning and evening, solar panels could be used to provide power during the hours of the day when the sun is at its most powerful.
After a good site has been selected, you should work out your power needs. Make a list of all your house's electrical appliances and lights. Write down the wattages for each, then multiply by the number of hours you run each item each day. The total represents your daily electricity requirements in watt-hours. Next, estimate the power that you will get from the wind turbine by looking at a manufacturer's performance graph. Choose a machine whose estimated output matches your energy needs.
Wind power can lower your electricity costs and provide you with safe natural energy for years to come. Following these steps will put the turbine in the most ideal location so it can run at full efficiency.
