6 clear steps to properly clean hot tub jets

To keep the water in your hot tub clean and kill bacteria, sanitizer or bleach will do the trick. But when it comes to the inner parts of the jets, you’ll need to use a little elbow grease to get at the calcium deposits, especially if you have hard water.

1. Drain the hot tub

  • If you're only cleaning the jets, drain the hot tub so the water sits just below them
  • Otherwise, drain the entire tub and take the opportunity to give the surface a good wiping

2. Remove the jets

Your hot tub may have jets that screw or snap in and out.

  • First, turn the jet counterclockwise
  • If the jet is screwed to the hot tub, a quick turn will loosen it, and repeated turns will remove it completely -A snap-in jet will snap out after a quarter turn or more
  • Carefully remove the jets from the hot tub

3. Soak the jets

  • Place the jets in a bucket and cover them with white vinegar
  • Soak them for 24 hours to loosen grime and remove calcium deposits
  • Remove the jets and set them on a table or in a sink for further cleaning

4. Gather cleaning products

Check the manufacturer's manual for the right cleaning products to use on the jets. Certain chemical cleaners may harm them, so ensure you use only those listed in the manual.

5. Clean the jets

  • Spray the jets with the appropriate cleaner and wipe with a rag
  • Scrub tight areas with an old toothbrush
  • Remove any hair that may have twisted around the jets
  • Inspect each jet after cleaning to ensure all debris is removed — even the tiniest obstructions can prevent it from operating properly

6. Place the jets back in the hot tub

  • Place the jets back inside the hot tub and screw them in clockwise until they stop
  • For a snap-in style jet, push it back in until it snaps into place, then screw it clockwise until it stops
  • Fill the hot tub with water
  • Do not run the jets until there is enough water to cover them.

It’s also a good idea to use a product that prevents stain and scale on your hot tub's shell and jets. This will keep the jets running effectively and reduce cleaning time on the hot tub's surface.

Cleaning jets isn't a difficult task as long as you use the proper products and know-how to remove and replace them inside the hot tub. These tips will help ensure you get the most out of your hot tub.
