A simple checklist for last-minute weddings

January 29, 2015

Throwing a last-minute wedding? It's more common than you think. From a family illness, a new job, a sudden pregnancy or sheer spontaneity, several factors can cut planning short. Whatever the reason, it can be daunting to throw a wedding with little time to plan. Fortunately, throwing a last-minute wedding can be simple if you follow this checklist.

A simple checklist for last-minute weddings

Find a venue

Don't worry if your favourite venue is unavailable for a last-minute ceremony. Wedding ceremonies can be held in churches, backyards, parks, museums, libraries, halls and everywhere else on Earth — if you're creative. Be sure to find a venue that fits your budget. If all else fails, consider a civil marriage ceremony and focus your efforts on the reception.

Invite your guests

Not everyone will be able to change their plans at the last minute to attend your wedding. With that in mind, make a list of family members and friends you want to have with you on your big day. If you don't have time to send out formal invitations, consider using an online service like Paperless Post or Evite for attractive e-invitations.

Find a wedding dress

Last-minute brides often opt for non-traditional dresses. Can you borrow one from a friend or buy a dress online or at your favourite consignment or charity shop? Perhaps you can add some fun accents, like costume jewellery to your best suit. What really matters is that you feel beautiful and confident at your wedding.

Focus on the celebration

Weddings are really nothing more than a public acknowledgement and celebration of your relationship, so keep that in mind when planning a last-minute party. Your reception doesn't have to be formal or fancy. It can be as simple as a family picnic, an at-home brunch or a raucous dinner out. No matter what you decide, find ways to make the party special. Ask the restaurant staff to create a signature cocktail for the couple or find out if the restaurant has a last-minute opening in a private room. Don't fret over the wedding cake. A store-bought cake, cupcakes or even another dessert will do just as well.

No matter what, think about the things that matter the most. As long as you have each other, some good food, and a chance to celebrate, your day will be a memorable start to forever.
