Diaper facts every parent should know

July 28, 2015

You'll have to decide which side to take in the great diaper debate. Here's how to know if you're on the side of disposables, reusables, or the diaper service.

Diaper facts every parent should know

Cloth diapers

  • These are usually the cheapest, since after you have made the initial outlay for diapers, pins and pants, you can use them until your toddler is potty trained.
  • Be aware that you still have to pay for disposable liners and to wash and dry the diapers.
  • Look out for nearly-new diapers that have been abandoned in favour of disposables.

Shaped reusable diapers

Reusable diapers are up to three times as expensive as regular cloth diapers, and also need cleaning, but they could save you in the long run.

Disposable diapers

  • Disposable diapers are the most popular option, and the most expensive.
  • You can save money by buying generic-brand diapers, but if they don't fit as well or are not as absorbent, they may not be worth the savings.
  • Reduce the cost of branded diapers by signing up with the manufacturers so you benefit from money-off vouchers.
  • Watch out for better prices on bulk offers in supermarkets, pharmacies and online.

Diaper service

A laundering service for reusable diapers will collect your dirty diapers and drop off clean ones every week. But this can cost around $16 a week (a hefty $1,664 over two years).

Washable wipes

  • If you use cloth diapers, save more money by using washable wipes as well.
  • Buy a bundle of washcloths at a discount store or price club and keep them in the bathroom nearest your baby's changing area.
  • When it's time to change your baby, dampen a clean cloth in the sink and use that to wipe your baby's bottom. Toss the dirty cloths in your diaper bucket to wash and sterilize along with the diapers.

Finding the right diapers isn't just about your baby's comfort. The right kind will also help you save money for more important things your baby may need.
