A guide to cleaning your sink with vinegar

Did you know vinegar may be your best ally when it comes to cleaning your sink? Follow these eco-friendly steps for a cleaner sink, drain and disposal.
Cleaning a clogged sink drain with a combination of white vinegar and baking soda has been known to work surprisingly well. Cleaning your sink with vinegar provides a more eco-friendly option than harsh cleaning chemicals.

If you’re interested in trying this DIY cleaning method, follow these basic steps to clean your sink with vinegar and baking soda:

• To begin the process, pour a pot of boiled water down your drain.
• Dump in approximately half a cup of baking soda. You’re going to want to let that sit for a bit before adding the vinegar.
• Next, pour a cup of vinegar and a cup of hot water down your drain on top of the baking soda. If you have a drain plug/stopper, place that on top of the mixture and let it sit for at least five to 10 minutes. You can let the mixture sit a lot longer (up to several hours), depending upon the size of the sink’s clog or how powerful the stench is.
• Once it has sat the desired amount of time, flush out your drain one final time with another pot of boiling water.

Baking soda naturally helps deodorize an environment. When combined, the vinegar and baking soda create a basic chemical reaction that removes any slimy food build-up that’s developed in and/or clogged your drain. This reaction helps scrub the scum from inside your pipes.

You can also apply this basic mixture to your garbage disposal to keep it smelling fresh.

One last word of advice: You should never mix the vinegar and baking soda together and then store them. Their chemical reaction will lose its power and be less effective.
