Are memory lapses normal?

When we lose our keys, we believe that we are losing our mind. In fact, everyone has memory lapses sometimes: it is a normal side effect of stress, distractions, multiplicity of tasks, and of course, aging.

  • If, in severe cases, it may be a sign of dementia, there is no need to worry when it comes to ordinary minor memory slips.
  • Moreover, the memory continues to be of great service well after the joints and other body parts have given to wear.
  • However, with age, the brain produces less neurotransmitters, and free radicals impair the functioning of brain cells.

Foods and products to avoid

  • Fatty meats, butter and other sources of saturated fat. These lipids drive up cholesterol levels, which can clog arteries and prevent adequate blood supply to the brain.
  • Flour and white breads, white rice, potatoes and sugary foods. These products cause spikes and drops in blood sugar levels, while the brain needs a steady supply.

Nutritional supplements to take

  • Multivitamins/minerals. The brain is so complex that it needs a lot of nutrients. Therefore, it is recommended that you take a multivitamin/mineral supplement to meet all of your needs. DOSE: one tablet per day.
  • Iron. Iron is necessary for supplying oxygen to the brain. It is also not uncommon for people who suffer from iron-deficiency anemia to also be prone to memory lapses. DOSE: for women under 50 years old, the recommended daily intake is 18 milligrams; for women over 50 and for men, that recommended daily intake is eight milligrams. Multivitamin supplements typically provide these doses.
