Oh Canada, you look great for your age! Our day of national pride on July 1st commemorates the day that united the colonies of Canada into a single Dominion in 1867. But enough with the politics, let’s party! What better way to celebrate the occasion than with explosions of light and colour in the night sky? Where to watch Canada Day fireworks in Vancouver

Set sail

One of the best ways to enjoy fireworks in Vancouver is from the deck of a boat. Ah, the gentle bobbing on the sea and the pyrotechnic display in the sky reflected in the harbour – a magical combination. Launch pads are barges, usually moored in Dundarave and Coal Harbour. Estimated time of fireworks launch is 10:30 pm. If you’re not a sailor yourself, consider a cruise. There are a few party boats in town and they sell out quickly. Consider treating yourself to an evening of drinks, dinner and dancing on Spirit Cruises. Sails hoist at 7:30 and guests spend four hours in luxurious comfort, culminating in the spectacular light display.

Go for a stroll

If an evening cruise isn’t in your budget, there are superb views of the same fireworks display along the water in Coal Harbour for free. For views of the barges, stroll the concrete park around the Convention Centre or along the seawall. For a soft seat, grab a blanket and claim a spot on the rolling hills of Harbour Green Park. This waterfront park is the perfect place for a picnic, to watch the seaplanes in action and the spot to settle in for the show in the sky.

Reserve a table

If it’s romance and elegance you want, reserve a spot at the waterfront favourite Lift Bar and Grill. Both the patio and dining room provide optimal views, plus you can dig into a hearty pork ribeye or a vegan Rockefeller mushroom roll. If Lift is all booked up, there are plenty of restaurants in Vancouver with great views.

Head to North Van

If North Van is more your speed, the SeaBus gets you there in less than 15-minutes and feels like a mini cruise. There are solid views of the fireworks at Lonsdale Quay, the pier by Shipbuilders’ Square and Waterfront Park. A nosh of tuna tataki or West Coast Boullabaisse will enhance the fireworks experience, and it’s just a three-minute walk to the good food and fine views at Pier 7.

Celebrate in Burnaby

Snuggled against Vancouver – and rich with waterfront views – Burnaby offers more than one reason to make our list. This year marks a double celebration for the City of Burnaby, which marks its 125th birthday. Their celebration includes a day of arts, culture, activities and other family fun. The evening event at Swangard Stadium kicks off with outdoor performances, followed by fireworks at dusk.

Secret spots

Lots of us have found secret spots in our ‘hood. Local favourites like hill tops and bridges will always attract viewers. Another hint: community gardens. These open spaces are often high on a slope and are in quiet areas, making them ideal for watching fireworks.
