Lava Hair started off small. Margo Korbel had been a stylist for 12 years, when she decided the time was right to go out on her own. “I searched out many locations, and Marda Loop had always been on my radar. It’s a very vibrant community. I absolutely love it,” says Margo. In 2006, she found the perfect spot on 33rd Avenue Southwest and named it Lava Hair. “Lava came to mind because it moves; it flows, kind of like hair. That was my inspiration.”
However, this unisex salon quickly outgrew its location. Two years after opening, Margo took over the space next door and doubled the size of the boutique. The success of Lava Hair is a great source of pride for Margo. “It was a gutsy move," she says of venturing out on her own. "I did not have any people lined up to work for me." She now employs 12 full-time stylists. “I just decided I’m going to make it the best place I possibly can, and people will come. And that’s exactly what happened.”
If you want the upscale salon treatment at regular salon prices, this is the spot. Lava offers cuts and colour, of course, but also set-and-style for special events and texture and smoothing for unruly or frizzy hair. The shop even employs a makeup artist if you want a completely fresh look.
