Metis Child & Family Services Society Edmonton (MCFS) was established in April 1985 by members of the Metis Local 1885 due to concerns with the high number of Metis and First Nations children coming into contact with Children's Services and the manner in which families were dealt with. We felt that we had the right and responsibility to determine how services would be delivered to our community; as well as participating in the design and delivery of those services. Unfortunately; we are still fighting for this right.
Our mandate is to promote the health and well-being of our Aboriginal community by building on the capacity of our community through the provision of culturally sensitive and appropriate programs and services to maintain the family unit by preventing and reducing the number of Aboriginal children coming into care of Children's Services.MCFS is an Aboriginal Family Resource Centre currently delivering 8 culturally focused social services programs to the Aboriginal community in Edmonton and surrounding area. We are in our 32nd year of service to our community and provide services such as family violence prevention and support; in-home family support services; youth mentoring services and family liaison services in 5 schools; protection of sexually exploited children; foster care and kinship care support services to over 180 files; Aboriginal awareness and diversity training; community on-street outreach services; and support services to RCMP Project Care and Edmonton City police. We also provide a monthly Victim of Violence support group and talking circle.
We do this work with a staff of 40; 18 of which are registered social workers, as well as several other degreed professionals and we are accredited in 5 standards programs with Aboriginal designation.more...See more text
