CrossFit is all about making your life better — being more mobile, more agile and feeling better about yourself. Ron Curran started CrossFit STEPS in Maple Ridge as way to extend a philosophy he had developed at his successful karate school down the street, Curran’s Karate, which is to teach discipline and focus and thereby increase the self-confidence of his students. And like at his karate school, Ron teaches his CrossFit students about perseverance and discipline. “It’s not about being best in the group — it’s about being better than your last workout,” Ron says.
Fitness at CrossFit STEPS isn’t about dieting; it’s about improving your life and keeping your body in shape so that everyday tasks aren’t a burden, Ron says. The basic tenets of CrossFit are that it is constantly varied, uses functional movements and is high intensity. CrossFit combines fitness and exercise so that all parts of the body are trained equally: weight lifting, power lifting, running, rowing, jumping, skipping, interval training and endurance training.
Ron suffered an injury a few years ago and to get back in shape, he started doing CrossFit. He saw how the multi-disciplined fitness craze was improving people’s quality of life. This led him to open the fitness centre in Maple Ridge in the summer of 2014.
