It’s two o’clock on a Thursday afternoon when a woman walks into the 2nd Nature Bakery and Café on Dupont Street. She has come to pick up a custom-made cake. “I’m sorry I gave you such short notice,” she says apologetically as she looks gleefully into the pink cake box. “No problem,” replies Rebekah Camara, the owner of the bakery. “I didn’t have much booked this week and I thought, ‘Great, I get to bake a cake!”
Rebekah opened the 2nd Nature Bakery and Café in July 2016 and says she has fun creating made-to-order cakes and pies along with the other sweet goodies found in her shop. Six mornings a week she rises before dawn and heads out to the bakery to make sure that by opening time, the shelves are filled with her fresh cookies, cupcakes, seasonal tarts, cinnamon buns and macarons, all made with the best organic ingredients. She also makes a daily soup, fresh sandwiches and gluten-free sweet treats.
Rebekah didn’t always want to own a bakery. She first studied journalism before realizing it wasn’t for her. “While at school I did a course in web design where we had to do a blog,” says Rebekah. “I decided to do baking and started making cupcakes, which were trendy at the time. I ended up more excited about making cupcakes than I was about writing the blog.”
