Claudia Quintanilla had always loved playing with yarn. Her mother taught her to crochet when she was just four years old. Knitting came to her at age 11, when she was taught by the nuns of her all-girls school. But it wasn’t until a family issue kept Claudia at home and away from her PhD studies for several years that she found solace in her fibre-arts hobby and thought of opening a shop.
EweKnit made its debut on Mirvish Village’s Markham Street in 2012, to much fanfare from the local knitting community. “They loved it because in this part of town there weren’t any other yarn stores,” Claudia remembers.
And when she picked up another hobby – sewing – Claudia created a sister store called Fabric.Works, selling beautiful prints, patterns and quilting supplies within the EweKnit space. The whole operation moved to Bloor and Shaw in 2015, amid uncertainty with the redevelopment of Mirvish Village.
