Meet the owner

Tariq Al Barwani and Mohammed Bin Yahya met in Calgary, where they were studying to become engineers. But upon graduating, they realized they wanted to pursue a different path. They decided to team up and start their own business based around a beverage they were raised on in the Middle East: tea.

“We were born and raised on a culture of tea,” explains Mohammed. “Obviously, we took that beverage to another level because we found out that tea is a beverage that can be enjoyed at any time, from morning to the time you go to bed. So we came up with a menu that can soothe people’s moods and the mindsets that they want to feel.”

They discovered Toronto was the perfect place to bring their concept to fruition. “It’s really a great city,” praises Tariq. “Very mixed, very multicultural. People are very open to accepting new ideas. And Parkdale is the perfect community because it’s an open community.” On February 15, 2016, they opened Plentea, a tea bar at the corner of Queen Street West and Dufferin Street.

Tariq and Mo, and their employees, have always been so friendly and welcoming. Usually I have green matcha, but anytime I want to try something different, its always delicious, like the black velvet I had today! Very sad that COVID is forcing them to close ? Last day is May 31st.

These guys are like the mixologists of tea. It’s not your average tea bar. They use no tea bags – think loose leaf teas mixed with spices and other ingredients. Like a cocktail without the alcohol to give you a hangover. They have two versions. One is called the Pure Gold, made with turmeric, honey, ginger, cinnamon and chai. The other is the Tainted Gold, a chocolate infused turmeric milk spiced with ginger and chai.
