Hintonburg and Wellington West Village is the place to go for a pick-me-up at any time of day. The ’hood is hopping with cafés where you can satisfy your caffeine cravings. From freshly roasted coffee beans to fair-trade and organic tea blends to icy cold brews, the choices are almost endless.
Serving organic and fair-trade coffees, teas, and baked goods, this neighbourhood favourite is open from early morning into the evening. Both locations on Wellington West are busy at all hours with children dropping by before and after school for cold drinks, apple cider and hot chocolate. Light medium and dark roast drip coffees are served alongside espresso-based specialty drinks and seasonal beverages. The increasingly popular cold brew coffee is carbonated and slightly sweetened (some call it Bridgehead’s version of Red Bull). Visitors can also pick up a variety of freshly roasted beans from around the world to bring home.
This charming bloom boutique sells more than gorgeous floral arrangements and luscious plants for weddings and special occasions. While it might be off the main strip, the studio’s on site café is a beautiful spot to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy a cup of coffee, either out on the patio or inside the store itself. If you’re hungry, there’s also a tasty array of pastries and cookies from local bakeries (including The French Baker) on hand. It’s a hidden gem on one of the busiest roads in Ottawa.
Cyclelogik is the funkiest coffee shop in the ’Burg. Primarily a high end bicycle store and multi-sport boutique, this neighbourhood hotspot proudly boasts that it’s powered by caffeine and is the only shop on Wellington Street West serving Francesco’s Coffee from Ottawa’s original roast-to-order micro-roastery. Have a cup of coffee at the front bar while admiring top-of-the-line bikes on display and chatting with the knowledgeable staff about the best spots in the city for cycling.
Though bags of Happy Goat Coffee beans are available in retail shops around the city, owner and roast master Henry Assad warmly welcomes those who wish to drop by the flagship café on the border of Hintonburg and Little Italy. Inside the converted industrial garage exterior you’ll find a unique coffee haven with quirky artwork, funky furniture and some of the city’s best java. Several different types of beans from Africa, Asia Central and South America are roasted daily on the premises, thus ensuring the freshest cup possible.
Step in to Bread by Us and you’ll find some of the happiest people in the city baking breads and making coffee behind the counter. While bread is their specialty, coffee is also served with just as much pride. Using roasted beans from Happy Goat, each cup is carefully prepared using a Chemex machine, which is designed to extract the beans’ unique flavour profile and showcase the complexity of different roasts and blends.
Primarily a catering and take-home food shop, Thyme and Again is also a cozy eatery serving house-made pastries, breads, sandwiches, desserts, pre-made meals to go, tea and, of course, coffee. Though the drink menu is small, that hasn’t stopped locals from stopping in frequently to sip cappuccinos and organic fair trade coffees. Savour a cup of coffee on the patio or in the dining area at the front of the store. For a much quieter atmosphere, head upstairs to the second floor where the walls are lined with local art.
Nestled quietly along the epicurean row of Wellington West Village, it’s easy to miss this beautiful little teashop. The interior is bright yet intimate and features polished wood, gleaming canisters of loose-leaf tea and soft lighting from above. The tea list is extensive, with over 30 varieties to choose from. Reservations are needed if you’d like to book a spot for the afternoon High Tea service. During the two-hour sitting, expect individual pots of tea served ceremoniously alongside a three-tiered serving stand adorned with freshly baked scones, finger sandwiches, and decadent tarts and chocolates. Service is warm and amicable.
This local coffee shop and deli has been a beloved staple of the neighbourhood since 1984. The smell of Montreal-style bagels wafting out the door is enough to draw a crowd throughout the day. Whether sitting at the bar, taking a seat at a table or relaxing on the couch, many have enjoyed a cup of coffee or two with a bagel sandwich. After you’ve satisfied your caffeine cravings, browse the shelves and pick up gourmet delights such as chocolates, sauces, jams, preserves, candies and teas to take home.
