Sometimes you just need a bite of something delicious to get you from point A to point B, without the hassle of sitting down to dine on a full meal. The next time you happen to find yourself strapped for cash or time or both, let’s hope you’re near East Vancouver’s Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood – a veritable paradise of snacks and tasty munchies for under $5.
Mr. Red Café is a favourite among food bloggers and restaurant critics. Specializing in Northern Vietnamese cuisine, any one of the menu’s bahn mi sandwiches could easily become your favourite lunch-on-the-run. I prefer the spicy bahn mi myself – a mixture of Vietnamese pate, spicy green onions and chilli oil served on four fingers of toasted white bread.
East Café is easily Hastings-Sunrise’s friendliest neighbourhood coffee spot. And it helps that their barista, Tomo, is also a pro-baker. Whenever I’m feeling a mid-afternoon slump coming on, I can rely on East Café’s Sugar Daddy cookies – two full-sized sugar cookies separated by buttercream frosting – to get me through the rest of the work day.
The East Village Bakery makes a ton of delicious gluten-free baked goods and I’d challenge any one of you to tell them apart from regular baking. A slice of their flourless chocolate cake is a slice of heaven. And you don’t even need a fork and knife to eat it – the definition of a great snack in my opinion.
This Thai restaurant used to be a bakery/coffee shop and the cinnamon buns (made from a recipe by the former owner) were so beloved that the new owners decided to keep selling the originals. That’s good news for the mid-morning snackers of East Van because these cinnamon buns are crispy on top, soft on the inside, and the perfect accompaniment to a cup of coffee.
Don’t want to ruin your appetite for dinner, but don’t want to drink on an empty stomach? Happy-hour snackers may look no further than What’s Up Hot Dog?, Hastings-Sunrise’s newest and coolest happy hour spot, serving up sweet deals on local beer and highballs. The waffle fries, somehow crispy and chewy at the same time, are the perfect complement for any drink.
A traditional Italian snack, Arancini are balls of rice stuffed with cheese and a combination of veggies or meat, coated in breadcrumbs and fried. With choices like eggplant parmesan and spinach ricotta, these “snacks” are pretty much meals in themselves. They might only cost a few bucks a piece, but I would suggest eating only one at a time, lest you fall prey to a mid-afternoon carb coma.
