Cheap snacks under $5 in Hastings-Sunrise

Sometimes you just need a bite of something delicious to get you from point A to point B, without the hassle of sitting down to dine on a full meal. The next time you happen to find yourself strapped for cash or time or both, let’s hope you’re near East Vancouver’s Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood – a veritable paradise of snacks and tasty munchies for under $5.

Mr Red Cafe Inc

Mr. Red Café is a favourite among food bloggers and restaurant critics. Specializing in Northern Vietnamese cuisine, any one of the menu’s bahn mi sandwiches could easily become your favourite lunch-on-the-run. I prefer the spicy bahn mi myself – a mixture of Vietnamese pate, spicy green onions and chilli oil served on four fingers of toasted white bread.

East Café

East Café is easily Hastings-Sunrise’s friendliest neighbourhood coffee spot. And it helps that their barista, Tomo, is also a pro-baker. Whenever I’m feeling a mid-afternoon slump coming on, I can rely on East Café’s Sugar Daddy cookies – two full-sized sugar cookies separated by buttercream frosting – to get me through the rest of the work day.

East Village Bakery

The East Village Bakery makes a ton of delicious gluten-free baked goods and I’d challenge any one of you to tell them apart from regular baking. A slice of their flourless chocolate cake is a slice of heaven. And you don’t even need a fork and knife to eat it – the definition of a great snack in my opinion.

Thailicious

2404 Hastings St E, Vancouver, BC V5K 1Z1

This Thai restaurant used to be a bakery/coffee shop and the cinnamon buns (made from a recipe by the former owner) were so beloved that the new owners decided to keep selling the originals. That’s good news for the mid-morning snackers of East Van because these cinnamon buns are crispy on top, soft on the inside, and the perfect accompaniment to a cup of coffee.

What's Up ? Hot Dog!

Don’t want to ruin your appetite for dinner, but don’t want to drink on an empty stomach? Happy-hour snackers may look no further than What’s Up Hot Dog?, Hastings-Sunrise’s newest and coolest happy hour spot, serving up sweet deals on local beer and highballs. The waffle fries, somehow crispy and chewy at the same time, are the perfect complement for any drink.

Bianca-Maria Italian Foods

A traditional Italian snack, Arancini are balls of rice stuffed with cheese and a combination of veggies or meat, coated in breadcrumbs and fried. With choices like eggplant parmesan and spinach ricotta, these “snacks” are pretty much meals in themselves. They might only cost a few bucks a piece, but I would suggest eating only one at a time, lest you fall prey to a mid-afternoon carb coma.

Vancouver is unquestionably a city of coffee fans; one can find an indie café on almost every street corner. However, some days you just have to have your espresso the Italian way. Check out these local cafés if you're craving an authentic Italian experience. [Photo © Yellow Pages / Pages Jaunes]
Besides its rich cultural history, Turkish coffee is known for its strong flavour and unique unfiltered texture. It is poured into small cups from a copper cezve, grinds and all. Though not for the faint of heart, this beverage is favoured by many coffee fans, but can be hard to find if you don't know where to look. These Vancouver cafés and restaurants serve tasty traditional Turkish coffee to start you off.
Once a skid road for dragging logs to harbour, then a streetcar route and Italian suburb, Commercial Drive has long been central to Vancouver’s cultural diversity. Today, the foodie-focused strip is lined with restaurants, cafés and bars serving an array of international cuisines. These spots are worth checking out if you’re into food - like really, really into it. [Photo courtesy of Jamjar]
