Spice it up at these NDG restaurants
Notre-Dame-de Grâce (NDG) has become a trendy spot. Unique shops and grocery stores abound, and you will find an incredible array of ethnic restaurants covering every corner of the world. Eating your way through Sherbrooke West, between Décarie and Cavendish, could take a week. Below you will find a few favourites that have been around for decades, and some new kids on the block that are already making a name for themselves.
Restaurant Hwangkum
5908, rue Sherbrooke O, Montréal, QC H4A 1X7This small family-run Korean spot is a local favourite known for its friendly staff. The menu features all the Korean classics, like bulgogi, seafood pancake and kimchi, plus a few unknown dishes for the adventurous.
Tacos Tijuana
5889, rue Sherbrooke O, Montréal, QC H4A 1X6One of the newest places to open, Taco Tijuana has already forged a reputation for serving large, fresh tacos with top quality ingredients at a very reasonable price. Quite authentic too! The place is tiny so be prepared for a line-up.
Jardin Iwaki
5887, rue Sherbrooke O, Montréal, QC H4A 1X6A true Japanese hidden gem. There is no menu here; the only option is the omakase, a 7-course meal designed by the chef, for around $30 to $40. Tadayuki Endo creates plates inspired by his home, Iwaki, Japan, after which the restaurant was named. The small dishes are beautiful and perfectly executed. A perfect place for a long romantic dinner.
Étoile des Indes
5860, rue Sherbrooke O, Montréal, QC H4A 1X5In my humble opinion, this is one of the best Indian restaurants in all of Montreal. The staff will bend over backwards and the decor is perfectly over the top too. All the dishes are great, as are the samosas and naan bread. You will find a couple of Indian beers to try too.
La Louisiane
5850 Rue Sherbrooke O, Montréal, QC H4A 1X5If you have a craving for Cajun cuisine then this is the place to be. Besides the daily menu, you’ll find the classics like shrimp étouffé, jambalaya, crabs cakes and banana foster. There are authentic cocktails too like the Sazerac or Vieux-Carré. With the dark candle-lit ambiance, one would think they are dining right off the bayou.
Pizzéria Melrose
5779, rue Sherbrooke O, Montréal, QC H4A 1X2I admit I was shocked the first time I saw this brand-new place: it is very swank and sleek-looking for the neighborhood. The Neopolitan-style pizzas are very good and pair well with their great selection of wines. I think this establishment will flourish quite well.
5 Saisons Sushi Deluxe
5594A, rue Sherbrooke O, Montréal, QC H4A 1W3Great sushi and BYOB all under one roof. The quality of the sushi here is excellent and the rolls are usually generous. Forget all you can eat places - this restaurant offers a nice selection of familiar sushi and a few original house specials. Presentation is lovely and the prices are great for this level of quality.
Dawa Chicken Restaurant
6135, rue Sherbrooke O, Montréal, QC H4A 1Y4Fried chicken is all the rage and who would have thought one of the best places in town to enjoy excellent fried chicken would be at a Korean place? There are a few types of fried chicken to choose from (such as a Tao version) and all are served with basic sides. Not a fancy place but a great spot for a quick dinner that’s finger-licking good.
