Not to be too morbid, but if I was on death row, my last meal would definitely be Thai – it’s my favourite type of cuisine on the planet! The first time I ever had Thai food just so happened to be in Halifax, and I’ve been completely hooked ever since. Thai fare is very popular in the city, so you’ll never be too far from a steaming plate of pad Thai or a bowl of spicy green curry.
I had my first Thai food experience at Baan Thai so it holds a special place in my heart. I especially like going here for lunch because all of the daytime dishes are only $8.99, which includes a main dish with rice, plus a salad and soup. The lunch buffet is a great option for people with big appetites. If you don’t go with the lunch menu, I suggest the lettuce wraps – they’re my favourite thing on the menu.
This family-run Asian restaurant in Dartmouth Crossing is to die for! Although they offer a variety of Chinese and South East Asian cuisine, their real speciality is fresh, homemade, mouth-watering Thai dishes. The best part? Every single item on the menu is made from scratch that day – no additives!
With three locations in Halifax, the Queen Street outpost of Cha Baa Thai is definitely the most central, but they all serve the same amazing food. They also have really good lunch specials ($11.50), and the most delicious Thai iced tea – a real treat! I also love the papaya salad (som tam), which is super fresh tasting and delicious. Don’t believe me? The Coast voted Cha Baa Thai the best Thai restaurant three out of the last five years!
Most of my friends say that Talay Thai is their favourite Thai restaurant in Halifax. They have two locations in Halifax, and another outpost on the Dartmouth side on Cole Harbour Road. Don’t pass up their pad Thai – it’s some of the best I’ve ever had. All of their lunch specials are $10 and they also offer delivery if you’re feeling too lazy to leave the house.
Also serving up authentic Vietnamese dishes, this little Thai restaurant is very popular and has been around for a long time. It’s frequented by downtown business folk at lunchtime, so it’s always a busy spot throughout the workweek. My favourite dish is the peanut curry, which is creamy and delicious and always hits the spot.
They’re everywhere! Business is booming for Thai Ivory Cuisine and the restaurant has opened up numerous locations across the city in recent years. The menu features all the classic Thai dishes – curries, noodles, rice, salads, soups, satays, spring rolls, and of course, authentic Thai dessert. It’s definitely family-friendly and the food is very consistent; you can expect the same great taste at any of their locations.
