Vancouver’s best veggie burgers

With a remarkable selection of healthful, veggie-friendly restaurants to choose from, Vancouver is home to some of North America’s most mouthwatering vegetarian and vegan cuisine. When comfort food is more compelling than gourmet, this list offers the finest veggie burgers in the city. [Photo credit: iStock.com/cass greene]

The Naam Office

1
2724 4th Ave W, Vancouver, BC V6K 1R1

For all things vegetarian, The Naam has been a go-to Kitsilano favourite for more than 30 years. Their tofu and nut veggie burger is more filling a steak, loaded with extras (such as sautéed mushrooms, pineapple, onions and cheese), and comes with a host of sides including multiple dips, potato wedges and a hearty salad. Be prepared for leftovers.

The Ouisi Bistro

2
3014 Granville St, Vancouver, BC V6H 3J8

Cajun-style feasts aren’t usually vegetarian-friendly, but at South Granville’s local New Orleans restaurant-bar there are plenty of meat-free menu items for herbivores. A must-try is the signature Portobello mushroom burger, which is stuffed with pesto, mascarpone cheese and tapenade and served on a brioche bun with extras. Combined with skinny fries or a side salad, Ousi adds a touch of luxury to a staple dish.

Lucy's Eastside Diner

3
2708 Main St, Vancouver, BC V5T 3E8

Homey, chill and oh-so-moreish, Lucy’s celebrates the best of the old school diner – from its 24 hour opening, to traditional 50s decor, to a delicious array of burgers. Amidst their artery-clogging menu options you’ll find Lucy’s handmade veggie burger, which combines black beans, and chickpeas into a goat-cheese crusted patty. The signature dish is still served with Lucy’s famous fries with fry sauce, ensuring each offering is truly comfort food at its best.

Meet on Main

4288 Main St, Vancouver, BC V5V 3P9

Everything on the menu at this Mount Pleasant staple can be categorized as vegetarian comfort food. As a result, choosing from their extensive selections can be a challenge. Luckily, Meet on Main offers a range of unforgettable veggie burgers to suit all tastes. I recommend the mac-and-cheese burger: a house-made veggie patty smothered in vegan macaroni cheese, pickled jalapeños and two crispy onion rings.

Tera V Burger

5
2961 Broadway W, Vancouver, BC V6K 2G9

Tera V prides itself on cooking delicious vegetarian fare, and while customers can choose from an extensive array of wraps and smoothies, it’s the burgers that bring people from across Vancouver to this Kitsilano joint. There are two choices of basic burger: the traditional “no bull” burger that was voted Vancouver’s Best Burger by Le Burger Week judges, or a lighter tempeh patty. Toppings range from honey mustard sauce to tangy salsa and veggies.

The Rumpus Room

6
2301 Main St, Vancouver, BC V5T 3C9

No list of vegetarian cuisine in Vancouver is complete without mentioning Main Street’s favourite casual dining restaurant. The lineup down the block is often for The Foundation’s famous (and enormous) nacho platters, but their veggie burgers are just as delicious. The patties – served with salad and mango dressing – are made with peanuts and are dense enough to sink the Titanic.

Alibi Room

7
157 Alexander St, Vancouver, BC V6A 1B8

You can see the Alibi’s veggie burger coming from across the room. The eye-catching house-made patty is full of pulses, beans and wholesomeness, which offsets the mound of fries that accompany it. Each burger is served with chili mayo, lettuce, zucchini and coleslaw. Be warned: you might need two people to finish off this monstrous meal.

The Whip Restaurant and Gallery

8
209 6th Ave E, Vancouver, BC V5T 1J7

Another craft beer pub with quality food to match its boozy offerings, The Whip’s veggie burger is described on the menu as “infamous” for good reason. The two-puck-size patty is made with beets, black beans and carrots, served with all the traditional trimmings and a sweet chili glaze. Best when paired with a patio and craft beer of choice.

With its unparalleled views, nearby ocean and reflective glass skyscrapers, Vancouver really shines in summertime. When not on the beaches, much of the city sips a mojito or glass of the Okanagan’s finest on a patio. Here are some of the best summer staples and undiscovered spots for catching up on Vitamin D.
If Vancouver’s bar scene is too social or slick for your night-out requirements, these cozy nooks offer a relaxing alternative, and they’re the closest you can come to a true European pub experience on this side of the Atlantic. Wheel around the alleys of East Van and it won’t be long before you stumble upon one of the city’s craft breweries: on par with yoga studios for their popularity. During Vancouver Craft Beer Week, you can sample more than 300+ different brews (and ciders) from around the world.
