Suffering through diabetes is tough but manageable. As you get older, more complications start to factor in. Here is some advice on how to age well with diabetes.
The first step is to release denial. Recognizing honestly where you are with your diabetes and any collateral damage you've experienced is essential for mapping out a healthy future. One way to do this is with a test from your doctor called the "get-up-and-go test." It couldn't be simpler; you sit in a chair, cross your arms and then stand up. If you can't do that, it tells your doctor that your legs have weakened. Once you're up, you are asked to walk a few steps or more. Your pace and steadiness let the doctor assess your risk for disability. Of course, make sure your blood sugar is truly under control. This helps prevent vision problems and nerve problems — two key factors that lead to falls.
Falls are dangerous for all elderly people, but especially for those with diabetes, because your ability to heal is compromised. So take a long, hard look at your house and reduce the clutter. Keep floors clear of wires and remove scatter rugs, along with other hazards that could trip you up. A well-fitting pair of shoes with good traction and balance can go a long way to help keep you from sudden tumbles. Wear them in your home as well; wood floors and rugs can be slippery .Many falls happen when people get out of bed in the morning. Be sure to have both feet on the ground when you get up, and start the day slowly. Finally, if balance is becoming a greater issue as you age, there are all sorts of tools and devices to help you. Canes, hand rails, nonslip treads for the stairs and waterproof seats for the shower or tub are just a few examples.
Don't let weakness or age prevent you from starting an exercise program. Research shows a huge physiological — and psychological — benefit that even modest exercise provides for seniors who have long stopped exercising. If you have trouble standing, sit and exercise. You can find some online. To get maximum enjoyment out of your sessions, choose one with an engaging host and upbeat music that will keep you moving. If you prefer to exercise with a group, look for exercise classes designed for seniors, some of which focus on seated exercises. Everyone needs exercise. There are no exceptions.
Being honest with yourself, avoiding dangers and getting exercise are three ways you can age healthfully with diabetes.
