An at-home spa treatment can be gentle on both your skin and your bank account. Here are six easy recipes made using ingredients found in many kitchens or natural supplement stores that will leave you feeling great!

6 exquisite DIY pampering experiences

1. Detox bath salts

This detox eliminates toxins. The hot water encourages your body to sweat, while essential oils and salts stimulate elimination and circulation.

What you need

  • 250 grams (1 cup) Epsom salt
  • 4 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 4 drops juniper essential oil
  • 4 drops grapefruit essential oil

What to do

  • Add all of the ingredients to warm bath water and enjoy soaking for 20 minutes.

2. Muscle massage oil

Vegetable oils such as almond and avocado restore the skin's natural elasticity and sheen. This blend can help to relax your tight muscles.

What you need

  • 30 millilitres (2 tablespoons) apple cider vinegar
  • A good pinch of dry mustard powder
  • 3 drops wintergreen essential oil
  • 5 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 2 drops juniper essential oil
  • 200 millilitres (about 1 cup) olive oil

What to do

  • Warm the vinegar and blend it with the mustard so that the powder dissolves.
  • Add essential oils and mix well. Combine with olive oil in a plastic squeeze bottle. Store in a cool, dry place and shake well before use.

3. Body scrub

This naturopathic treatment can help to rejuvenate your skin and improve blood and lymph circulation.

What you need

  • 250 grams (1 cup) coarse sea salt
  • 30 millilitres (2 tablespoons) olive oil

What to do

  • Mix the ingredients to form a paste.
  • In the shower, massage small amounts into your legs, arms and stomach with circular movements, always moving up and in towards your heart. (Women should avoid using this body scrub on their breasts.)
  • Rinse off. End with a cold shower for a fresh and tingling sensation.

4. Body fizz

After the body scrub, finish off by spritzing your skin with this all-over body fizz. This mixture will last about six weeks if kept in the fridge. Discard it as soon as the scent fades.

What you need

  • 150 millilitres (2/3 cup) soda water
  • 100 millilitres (about 1/2 cup) apple cider vinegar
  • 15 millilitres (1 tablespoon) vodka
  • 2–3 drops grapefruit essential oil
  • 2–3 drops lemon essential oil

What to do

  • Combine all the ingredients and pour the mixture into a clean plastic pump-spray bottle with a non-metallic cap.
  • Store your body fizz in the fridge. Shake it well before using.

5. Fragrant powder

To avoid the potentially irritating artificial fragrances found in some commercial talcum powders, make your own dusting powder.

What you need

  • 250 grams (1 cup) rice flour
  • 350 grams (1.5 cups) corn flour
  • 8 drops ylang-ylang essential oil
  • 4 drops lemon essential oil
  • 4 drops vanilla essence

What to do

  • Mix the flours together, then sift them through a sieve to remove any lumps.
  • Add the oils and vanilla essence, then sift once more.
  • Store in a moisture-proof container.

6. Deodorant

This scented deodorant is an effective alternative to the aluminum salts used in most commercial deodorants.

What you need

  • 20 drops lavender essential oil
  • 12 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 10 drops lemon essential oil
  • 100 millilitres (about 1/2 cup) apple cider vinegar
  • 50 millilitres (1/4 cup) witch hazel

What to do

  • Mix all the ingredients together and pour into a pump-spray bottle.
  • Shake it before using. Spray onto your body or under your arms. (Do not spray the deodorant on or around the genital area.)

You don't need to visit a spa to enjoy a rejuvenating experience. Just follow the recipes above, turn on your favourite music and before you know it you'll be feeling completely relaxed.
