8 chili powder uses to spice up your life

June 30, 2015

With a little creativity and the easy guidance of these eight recipes, you can spice up your meals with the power of chili powder.

8 chili powder uses to spice up your life
  1. For livelier string beans, melt 30 millilitres (two tablespoons) unsalted butter and mix in two millilitres (1/2 teaspoon) salt, two millilitres (1/2 teaspoon) chili powder and 0.5 millilitre (1/8 teaspoon) garlic powder. Steam 500 grams (one pound) of string beans, drain and then toss with the butter mixture.
  2. To make "brownies from hell," add two millilitres (1/2 teaspoon) pure chili powder (such as ancho or chipotle chili powder) to a 23 x 28-centimetre (nine x 11-inch) pan of chocolate brownies. A few pinches of cinnamon add to the flavour, too. If you like the combination of spicy and sweet, you'll die for these brownies!
  3. For kicked up corn-on-the-cob, shuck fresh sweet corn and then wrap each ear with one or two strips of bacon. Place each ear on a piece of heavy-duty foil and sprinkle lightly with chili powder. Wrap securely, twisting the ends of the foil to make handles for turning. Grill over medium-high heat until the corn is tender and the bacon is cooked, turning once, about 20 minutes.
  4. To mix up a spicy butter for cooked fish fillets, chicken or potatoes, combine 125 millilitres (1/2 cup) softened butter, five millilitres (one teaspoon) chipotle chile powder and one millilitre (1/4 teaspoon) salt. Wrap in plastic and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  5. To perk up plain old burgers, add 30 millilitres (two tablespoons) chili powder per 500 grams (one pound) of ground meat.
  6. If you like your cornbread hot and spicy, add chipotle chili powder to the batter. Chipotle chilis are dried smoked jalapeño peppers, so they add a nice touch of smoke aroma as well. Look for chipotle chili powder on the gourmet spice rack at your supermarket.
  7. For hot chocolate with a kick, add ground ancho chili powder, ground cinnamon and almond extract to the mix.
  8. When you don't want to settle for plain old popcorn again, make it spicy with some ground chili pepper. First cook popping corn in a heavy pot in hot oil. When it's popped, toss the popcorn with a little curry powder, ground chili pepper, sugar and salt.
