5 ways to simplify back-to-school shopping

Back-to-school shopping does not have to be stressful. Consider some simplified ways to check everything off the list, no stress required.

5 ways to simplify back-to-school shopping

1. Consider the basic list

Most schools supply students with a school supplies list. Typically they include the following items:

  1. School backpacks or bags: It's important that your child's backpack fits correctly and is worn properly. Problems such as lower back pain and poor posture can result from an ill-fitting school bag.
  2. School binders: School binders store and organize handouts and papers. Customize binders by colour, special features or add-ons, but make sure they're sturdy enough to carry a semester's worth of work.
  3. School notebooks: Whether it's paper books for writing or tablets for reading and recording, a school notebook is an essential learning tool. Find out what the school allows or requires and choose the best within your budget.
  4. Pens, pencils and erasers: The world may be going digital, but this trio of writing supplies is still essential.

2. Set a budget

Back to school supplies can include big ticket items like school clothes or school uniforms, or things relatively easy on the budget like pencils and erasers. Be sure to consider every item when making your list

3. Define needs v.s. wants

What is a need and what is a want? What can be reused or recycled, either from last year or from an older child moving on? By really questioning what you're buying, you'll be able to stick to your budget.

4. Shop all year 'round

There are some items you know you will need, so to make your life easier and keep an eye out for key items throughout the year.

  • Keep a storage bin or a shelf just for school supplies, buy when an item is on sale and add it to your collection.
  • Not only will you save money and be ahead of the game, but items will be on-hand whenever your child runs out. No more panics or last minute rushes.

5. Get your child involved

Go over the school supply list with them and prioritize what's needed and when.

  • Not only will it make your job easier, but your child will be invested in the process. It will also teach him or her the benefits of pre-planning and budgeting.

If you do your homework ahead of time and involve your child in the process, everyone will be prepared for the back-to-school supplies shopping frenzy, and for the school year ahead.
