Golf isn’t the sort of game you can master in a few hours. It takes time to learn this sport. with practice, these steps will have you putting like a pro.

Easy Steps to Improving Golf

The Equipment

  • You need a set of seven clubs to play golf: a putter, a driver, a sand wedge and four irons or numbers three, five, seven and nine.
  • If you’re an absolute beginner, it’s a good idea to make sure that your clubs are all the same make so they all have the same “feel” when you play. Don't just purchase a random set of odd clubs.
  • Take advice on equipment from a more experienced player, or from the golf pro at your golf club.

Tips to Improve Your Playing

How skilled you are at putting is the key to winning a round of golf. These tips will help you improve your putting in a snap.

  • "Walk the Green": when you have to put, walk the distance between the ball and the hole to get an idea of how far it needs to go. Weight your shot accordingly so that it’s not so light that the ball won’t reach the hole nor so hard that it overshoots.
  • Visualise a point beyond the hole as your target. Aim for an imaginary flag half a metre beyond an imaginary line connecting your ball and the hole. This will help you keep the ball on track when you putt.

Think Strategically

A golf course is full of features which test your aim and judgement when putting so think each shot out before you hit the ball.

  • Don't just slam the ball down the middle of the fairway. Think about how you're going to approach the hole. There are always several ways of doing this. Your job is to decide which one works best.
  • Sometimes you have to “tack" or zigzag towards it rather than approach it directly.
  • Take hazards like water and sand traps into account and decide if you want to take the risk of placing your ball close to them. This is a good way of developing your skills and confidence and of learning how to gauge the lie of the course.
