It's exciting, isn't it? Planning a trip? To ensure you don't forget a single thing, here's the ultimate ski trip checklist that covers the essentials from A to Z.

The essentials from A to Z: the ultimate ski trip checklist

Whether for a whole week or just a weekend, forgetting to pack an essential item can put a damper on the excitement. To help keep you safe, warm and having fun, here's the ultimate ski trip checklist to ensure your trip is nothing less than spectacular—and nothing gets overlooked!

Clothing—outer layers

  • Ski/snow jacket.
  • Ski pants/bib.
  • Ski boots—these can be rented if you don't already have your own.
  • Winter boots.
  • Face mask.
  • Neck warmer/gaiter.
  • Ski gloves—pack waterproof gloves to keep your fingers from becoming icicles.
  • Headband/earmuffs/hat—otherwise your ears will get cold. Don’t skip these!
  • Ski helmet—even the pros wear helmets.
  • Goggles/sunglasses—things are bound to hit your face, so protect your eyes with quality goggles. When not skiing, sunglasses shield against the bright sun reflecting off the snow. Both are a must.

Clothing—mid and base layers

  • Silk or wool ski glove liners.
  • Thermal underwear—avoid cotton, as that will only soak up moisture rather than protect you from it. Pack as many of these layers as you think is necessary against the cold.
  • Thermal undershirt—again, stay away from cotton. Layer as necessary.
  • Heavy sweater—can be used instead of (or in addition to) a thermal undershirt.
  • Fleece wear—keep some vests and long-sleeve fleeces for over your thermals. Remember, the key to staying warm is layering!
  • Regular athletic socks—most ski boots are well insulated so you won't need several bulky layers of socks. Two pairs will be fine.

Ski equipment

Most of your ski equipment can be rented at a resort or sports equipment store, if you don't already own it. Here's what you will need:

  • Skis—if you’re heading to fresh or thick-powder destinations, grab wide skis.
  • Ski poles.
  • Ski bag—to make carrying your skis easier.
  • Powder ribbons or straps—for deep-powder skiing.
  • Lift pass holder—not necessary, but nice for resort skiing.
  • Wax and iron—for DIY ski prep.
  • Ski lock—to safeguard your skis.

Other necessary gear

  • Small backpack.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Lip balm.
  • Tissues.
  • Goggles/sunglasses cleaning cloth.
  • Ibuprofen.
  • Disposable hand warmers—available in most pharmacies and a great way to heat up cold fingers.
  • Assorted adhesive bandages for minor nicks.
  • Identification to carry while skiing.
  • Waterproof pouch to carry extra money for emergencies.

One more note of caution to add to this ski checklist is to purchase ski insurance. In the event of injury or emergency, you’ll be happy you paid the small premium to keep yourself financially protected and physically cared for.

Enjoy the powder this ski season knowing you’re prepared!
