Meet the owner

“I’ve always tried to make this place comfortable for everyone,” says Nhu Lan Nguyen, owner of Restaurant Pho Viet in the heart of Montreal’s Quartier Latin. “When I took it over, I wanted it to be a place where everyone felt respected.”

The small, intimate setting of Lan’s restaurant certainly portrays those values with its simple colour schemes, a basic menu of Vietnamese standards, and the frequent presence of Lan’s sister, daughters, mother and other close relatives.

Since 1987, Pho Viet has been a family staple in the neighbourhood, attracting media attention and a steady stream of loyal clients. Because of the reputation her restaurant has established, Lan often makes appearances to speak on issues in her native Vietnam. “The attention really started when one of our regulars got her first job as a journalist, but I think we’ve earned our reputation from there!”
