Sohail Zaidi – Zee, as everyone calls him – is a one-of-a-kind businessman. A former cab driver in New York City, he lived for a while in Beaumont, Texas, where he owned and operated a gas station. He then moved to Edmonton, where he found himself wondering what to do next. "I wanted to start a business that wouldn’t be a cab or a gas station, but didn’t specifically know what. One day, driving through the city, I noticed a café that was up for grabs, and I bought it. That was the start of Remedy Café in October, 2000."
The café serves up coffee and other staples of the genre, but they’re not what Remedy Café is most famous for. Zee offers his clients a creative mix of traditional café items, like bagels and muffins, and Indian delicacies, like samosas and dahl dishes.
Again, one would think a café’s most popular drink would be coffee. Not at Remedy; the chai is what brings diners to the café’s five locations. "It’s been a hit ever since I started offering it," Zee says. "It’s very tasty, and it’s organic; customers love it."
Remedy Café is licensed, so they cater to night owls – each location throughout the city stays open till midnight every day of the week. But, you don’t have to sip a beer to stay late – try one of their Kashmiri Chai drinks instead; it’s a non-caffeinated version of their famous Chai. They also have a lovely selection of gluten-free and vegan cakes and cookies, as well as a menu of Indian cuisine. If you’re not into Chai, they also make a mean milkshake. Above all, it’s a cool place to hang out and people watch.
Open ‘til 12 a.m. every night of the week and equipped with plenty of outlets to give all your electronics juice, Remedy is the perfect place to hang solo when burning the midnight oil and then some. Keep yourself motivated with a signature Chai, or kick back and relax with a beer. Feeling peckish? Dig into some savoury Indian eats, or satiate your sweet tooth with a tasty treat.
Anyone who’s anyone studies at Remedy. The sweet aroma of Chai with the comfort of Indian and Pakistani dishes with a twist can calm the nerves of any stressed out student, and promotes a relaxing, ready-to-work atmosphere.
