There’s nothing quite like the unbridled self-indulgence one gets from biting into a donut! Whether they are shaped into rings, balls, twists or sticks, memories of the sweet fried pastries can get many of us salivating. At Steveston’s Outpost Mini Donut Co., these are not the donuts of your youth! For the province’s health-obsessed foodies, these petite artisan bites of heaven are quite possibly refuelling a love affair with donuts.
Since opening its doors in 2011, donuts here have been flying off the shelves as quickly as the baker can produce them. “Last summer, we were going through 1,200 donuts a day on the weekends,” says owner Christian Desierto. “We also do a lot of catering. Recently, we had a bride-to-be request, 100 dozen donuts … imagine an assembly line of us working overtime to have them ready for delivery for an afternoon wedding.”
The Steveston resident, along with partners Sam and Christine Sidsworth, purchased the gourmet donut shop in May 2014. “It’s a place where my wife, children and I would come when we visited Steveston,” he says. “One day, I saw a For Sale sign and gave one of the former owners a call. Leslie was relocating to the U.S. but wanted an owner who would keep the brand going.”
While some people associate mini doughnuts with a certain summer fair, Outpost’s gourmet versions can be found year round in Steveston. The interior feels like a rustic cabin, complete with a fireplace and comfy couch. The warm and tasty cake-based morsels come in five flavours (cinnamon sugar, chocolate, maple, powdered sugar and vanilla) with an additional five seasonal doughnuts added to the menu. Bet you can’t leave without a baker’s dozen!
If you haven’t yet tasted the hot, sugary, melt-in-your-mouth mini doughnuts at Vancouver’s PNE, you have not lived. But the window of opportunity here is smaller than the hole in your deep-fried confection. As the fair is open a mere eight days in August, what is one to do the other 51 weeks of the year? Head to Steveston, of course, where Outpost Mini Donut Company will get you sorted. Classic flavours entice alongside seasonal offerings like lemon, coconut and PB&J. Order a half dozen for strolling the boardwalk and count the days till the PNE reopens.
