Meet the owner

“I’m Filipino, but I was lucky enough to be born and raised here in Vancouver,” says Minami’s chef de cuisine Alan Ferrer. “I love to showcase what we have right here in our backyard, from the Interior and the mountains to all the goodness of the ocean.” Since opening in the heart of Yaletown on Mainland Street in June 2012, Minami has been at the forefront of Vancouver’s popular dining scene with its signature Aburi-style charcoal flame-seared sushi.

Wait… sushi that’s cooked? Yes, that’s what Aburi-style sushi is. “People often have a question mark about that,” laughs Alan, “but when they get here, they see our sushi chefs prepare the sushi, then add the sauce and flame-sear it, then they understand. What makes us different is that you don’t need soy, wasabi, any of those things. Each individual roll and nigiri has already got its own dressing on it that works perfectly with the fish.”

Dine Out Vancouver: Upscale restaurants for serious foodies

Dine Out Vancouver: Upscale restaurants for serious foodies

We’ll forgive you for Instagramming the colourful rolls on the table during a night out at Minami – these mouth-watering morsels are worth sharing with your followers. Best of all, the high-quality Ocean Wise certified sushi tastes as good as it looks. Like its sister restaurant – the much-acclaimed Miku in Coal Harbour – this chic Yaletown restaurant specializes in Aburi-style sushi, which means oshi, rolls and nigiri are flame-seared using a blowtorch and bamboo charcoal to deliver a distinct smoky flavour. The chef’s signature sushi selections are on offer on both the lunch ($30) and dinner ($40) menus during Dine Out.

10 wheelchair-accessible restaurants and cafes in Vancouver

10 wheelchair-accessible restaurants and cafes in Vancouver

Yaletown’s elevated, cobblestoned streetscapes may be tricky to manage for those with mobility issues, but this elegant sushi restaurant on Mainland Street is a great choice for diners who are looking for an accessible spot to experience the vibrant neighbourhood. With a wide, stair-free entry way and three wheelchair-friendly bathrooms in the main dining area, guests won’t have to fret about accessibility and can instead focus on the modern Japanese cuisine. Flame-seared aburi-style pressed sushi rolls are the highlight here, but the West Coast inspired lunch and dinner menus also offer meaty entrees like pork, lamb and duck breast.

Vancouver restaurants with private dining rooms

This tasty Japanese restaurant in trendy Yaletown has private dining rooms full of personality. The Blue Ocean room has a floor-to-ceiling sea creature mural that winds around the entire space. From Minami’s mouth-watering gyozas to the delectable tuna tataki, the food is just as astonishing as the mural art.
