While growing up in India, Bicky Nanda learned to make handmade jewellery at the tender age of 15, and joined the family jewellery business early on because of his skill. A young ambitious man, he immigrated to Canada in the early 1980s, where he joined the jewellery industry. Immediately, he noticed the lack of a Punjabi shop in Vancouver. Knowing a good opportunity when he saw it, in 1985 he opened the doors of Hi-Class Jewellers to cater to this market and continue the Nanda family jewellery legacy in Canada.

“My dad [Bicky] came here with about 15 dollars in his pocket and within two years he opened his own shop. It was just that perfect opportunity that he took advantage of. He worked very hard and if it wasn’t for him, I don’t know where we’d be in our life,” says Gary Nanda proudly. He attributes the personable nature of both of his parents to the long history and success of their family business.
