Meet the owner

“When we were little, going to high tea was something very special. If you did well in school or if it was a birthday, you would go for high tea,” explains Huey Le, who owns La petite cuillère with her mother Bang and sister Lina. “We’re geared towards making that experience more affordable, and making it fun.”

Bringing high tea to the Vancouver masses, La petite cuillère is the perfect spot for a little lady’s first tea party, a birthday celebration or simply to escape from a cold, wet day.

“We keep a few things very traditional, like our cucumber sandwiches. When people come in for tea, that’s what they’re looking for and will generally get upset if there aren’t any cucumber sandwiches,” laughs Huey. “But we also offer a daily selection of miniature scones with Devonshire cream and jam, and sweets, and things where there’s a little more wiggle room for West Coast touches or our own family recipes.” Huey takes pride in baking delicious treats for her customers, and loves helping visitors experience an authentic English high tea with a Vancouver twist.

Cafés and tearooms for afternoon tea in Vancouver

Cafés and tearooms for afternoon tea in Vancouver

Delightfully vintage in Mount Pleasant’s Brewery District, this teashop’s interior feels like a 1930’s parlour – and has the charm to match. Their afternoon tea offerings are varied – from Le Petit Fromage Tea (cheese and tea), to high tea (finger sandwiches, cake and scones), to afternoon tea (a full tiered service with additional delicacies.) Their extensive range of loose-leaf tea is both adventurous and traditional, with many blended in-house for a truly unusual gift. During summer months, be sure to try some of La Petite Cuillere’s homemade iced tea as an accompaniment, too.

Savour a specialty cup at this old-is-new-again Mount Pleasant teahouse that serves a huge variety of black, green, herbal, and iced teas in a room with enough traditional flare to charm your cold away. English bone china cups and saucers and floral tablecloths adorn the homey room, where you can also try an assortment of baked-in-house treats and the signature Huey Blend teas, made by the owner herself. Don’t want to socialize? Pick up a bag of loose tea to take home; it pairs well with tissues and your Snuggie.

Where to have afternoon tea in Vancouver

Where to have afternoon tea in Vancouver

Mount Pleasant truly is lucky to have such a fabulous tearoom. La Petite Cuillere’s tea collection boasts more than 20 different varieties of black, green and herbal loose-leaf teas. When it comes to food, there are four different tea services to choose from depending on your hunger levels and flavour preferences. Traditional afternoon tea is a full three-tiered service while the smaller high tea is a lighter variation. For a simple snack, opt for the La Petite Cuillère tea with miniature sweets and a cupcake or the Le Petite Fromage tea, which pairs tea with cheese and fruit.
