Home to hundreds of yoga studios and gyms, the Grouse Grind and the birthplace of Lululemon, Vancouver has long held a reputation as a city with lots of fit, healthy residents. So, for fitness buffs on the hunt for anything that is going to nourish their bodies quickly, head over to Tractor Everyday Healthy Foods.

With five locations and growing, the West Broadway eatery offers a great selection of fresh veggie salads, soups, gluten-free power cookies, side snacks and stews made daily.

The visionaries behind the successful chain of self-serve restaurants (as of 2018) are husband and wife team, Steve and Meghan Clarke. “We were both in the corporate world, working long hours and raising two little kids,” says Meghan. “We felt like many others who are on the corporate rat race, spending less time with the kids and having no time to prepare healthy meals.”

When the native Vancouverites saw a lack of quick serve eateries, where people like them could buy wholesome prepared foods to serve their families, they decided to open their own. Both quit their corporate jobs and traded business suits for jeans.

In 2013, Tractor Everyday Healthy Foods in Kitsilano was born. “We used all of our own money to open Tractor in Kits,” says Meghan.

A fantastic healthy lunch option on the west side. They offer made to order sandwiches & maybe 8 different side dishes to add on, + soup options. Alternatively you can order salads or a stew. Order in assembly line fashion, get your add ons, pay & they will bring your sandwich to you. Casual, communal style seating / individual tables inside & outside in the patio. Try one of their fountain drinks too. I loved the infused lemonade. Restaurant is bright w/ natural light especially on a sunny day.

Mixing and matching colourful salads is all part of the fun at this a-la-carte eatery, but if you’re feeling too lazy to customize your own plate, give the kale chicken Caesar a try. The signature entrée-sized salad is a colourful variant on the classic recipe, featuring Brussels sprouts, cabbage, house-made croutons, asiago cheese and a zesty lemon Caesar dressing. Tractor’s cafeteria-style concept keeps things casual, but everything on the healthful menu is sourced and prepared with care, using local and organic meat, veggies and grains whenever possible. You’ll find locations in Kitsilano and downtown in the Marine Building.
