Hanji Gifts is a store created from love. Catherine Choi and Hyun Suk Choi fell in love in Korea, where Catherine was teaching English, and after they moved back to Catherine’s hometown of Toronto to start their new life. Hyun Suk was an entrepreneur in Korea and when he noticed how popular cards and stationery were he saw a way to bring a piece of his home country to Canada.
Hanji, meaning “Korean paper,” is a traditional style of paper made from the long fibres of mulberry bark. A popular sight in the markets of Seoul, but relatively unseen in Toronto, Catherine and Hyun Suk saw an opportunity to introduce it to Canada and opened their first store in 2011. Not long after, Hanji expanded to three locations, allowing them to carry higher end products. “It was going well. We thought why not make another one,” says Catherine. “We wanted to have a larger location because this one was feeling small for all the different kinds of products we wanted to carry.”
In Korean town, Hanji Handmade Paper and Gifts is the place for all things paper. Two whole walls are lined with sheets hanging in every colour imaginable. This mom-and-pop shop carries specialty patterned tape, wooden letter stamps, calligraphy pens, handmade cards, drawing books, and origami kits. All Hanji paper is, as the name says in Korean, handmade with mulberry branches, so you can feel good about the fact that no trees were cut down for your craft shopping experience.
Hanji is an adorable specialty paper shop in Koreatown. Sourcing unique stationery, minimalist handicrafts, stamps, pens and notebooks, this cozy spot is the perfect place to find a truly one-of-a-kind gift. Hanji is also equipped for your crafting and DIY projects with their beautiful, handmade mulberry paper, envelops, scrapbooking materials, ribbon, buttons and much more.
Hanji is a small shop with tons of handmade and paper-made items from Korea and Toronto. A beautiful bonding gift idea for your child: pass down your own youth diary tied to a new one (choose from the many cute options at the shop), and start a family tradition of sharing memories. They also have the most darling pop-up greeting cards and holiday-themed messages in a bottle – not to mention, they have lots of arts-and-craft goodies like printed paper, ribbons, ties, and book-making pieces for a serious DIY session.
