“Our family relationships are central to who we are. Our early connections help define who we become as individuals and the kind of relationships we develop later in life. It was this understanding that led me to specialize in couple and family therapy,” explains Isabel Melo, founder and director of Couple and Family Therapy Montreal. “I wanted to help people reconnect with the important people in their lives and create more secure, loving bonds.”
Isabel launched her couple and family therapy practice in 2002. The practice has since expanded with the addition of two associates, psychologist Nadja Grabovari and clinical social worker and therapist Rachelle Bayard. The team uses a couple therapy approach called Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), developed by Canadian psychologist and best-selling author Susan Johnson. Recognizing emotion as the key engine of change in couple relationships, EFT therapy encourages partners to identify and share their deepest, most vulnerable emotions.
Couple and Family Therapy Montreal helps couples from all walks of life. “We’ve seen a lot of growth in couple therapy. People want to put in the effort to improve their relationships and the stigma once associated with seeking professional help seems to have largely disappeared. I think it’s because of the widespread media attention therapy has gotten in recent years, in popular TV shows and bestselling books. People understand that outside help can truly make a difference,” says Isabel.
