This place has line-ups even when it’s cold out! Picture this: An ice cream cone filled up with a caramel and strawberry rhubarb soft serve twist, throw on a load of cake bites and chopped strawberries, and drizzle it with strawberry sauce. If that’s not enough, they have other flavours (cotton candy, anyone) plus paletas, root beer floats, and cold and hot espresso beverages garnished with wild cards like bacon – #DropsMic.
Arctic Bites
21 Baldwin St, Toronto, ON M5T 1L1The beauty of living in Toronto is that you get to taste all sorts of international treats. Arctic Bites brings Thai-inspired ice cream to the 6. They pour cream onto -20-degree cold plates, adding ingredients, smoothing it out and thickening it as it freezes, then rolling it out into a bowl, and then (duh) topping it with more goodies. Serving up tempting flavours like cinnamon toast crunch, matcha, taro, mint chocolate Oreo, Thai iced tea, morning coffee, and so much more, this is certainly one worth heading to the Baldwin Village for.
Pancho's Bakery
1017 Dufferin St, Toronto, ON M6H 4B5You may have heard of Pancho’s Bakery and its “I love Churros” offerings (their food trucks make appearances at several Toronto festivals, much to the hungry delight of festival-goers). Now they’ve introduced churrocones: ice cream in freshly fried churros. The Mexican pastries are rolled into a cone, deep fried, dunked in cinnamon sugar, topped with ice cream and placed in a cup to save you from a hot, melting mess. You can choose different flavoured ice creams, syrups and toppings like coconut, cereal, nuts and more.
Scoop Shop by Sweet Sammies
808 Dundas St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1V3Sweet Sammies is known for their delicious, fresh-baked cookies, one half of what may be the city’s best ice cream sandwich (though you can substitute for macarons, brownies and profiteroles instead). They have delicious ice cream flavours like mascarpone stracciatella, strawberry rhubarb pie, peanut butter and jelly, pistachio, mango froyo and salted caramel brownie cheesecake, to name a few. They also have other cool treats like popsicles, ice cream cakes, sparkling apple cider and root beer floats, and watermelon mint granite with sparkling lemonade.
Tsujiri
147 Dundas St W, Toronto, ON M5G 1C5This Japanese tea brand has opened up shop on Bay and Dundas. Their specialty is matcha – from drinks to pastries to ice cream (the desserts have three levels of flavour intensity so you can measure up the bitterness). The cute downtown spot offers soft serve and sundaes layered with crunchy roasted brown rice, red bean paste, a chestnut and chewy shiratama ball, and cherry blossom cookie. Matcha floats are also served and made with iced blended and topped with a choice of matcha or vanilla soft serve, or swirl mix of the two.
Toronto Union Station
65 Front St W, Toronto, ON M5J 1E6If you’re not drooling yet, this Budapest-born dessert spot will have your mouth watering in no time, because now we’re talking about the great human beings who decided to fuse ice cream and doughnuts. Eva’s Original Chimneys’ food truck can be found at the Union Summer market until September 2016. The cone-shaped doughnuts are coated with organic cane sugar and cinnamon, filled with Reid’s Dairy soft serve (or you can opt for the dairy-free option of coconut whipped cream), then topped with other delicious goodies like local berry compote, homemade salted caramel brownie and organic cocoa drizzle.
Booyah Inc.
16 Vaughan Rd, Toronto, ON M6G 2N1Three words: taco ice cream. Booyah serves your choice of flavoured ice cream in a taco-shaped, chocolate- and sprinkle-dipped waffle cone, topped with things like cookies, rainbow sprinkles, chocolate and whipped cream. They also have cinnamon buns smeared with Nutella, sprinkled with icing sugar and stuffed with chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. If that’s not enough choices for you, Booyah also serves ice cream sandwiches and milkshakes, too. How’s that for a boom shakalaka?!
